The fourth LAB7 lab focused on markerless motion capture, explored through a series of tests conducted with LAB7’s research partners, the National Circus School of Montreal’s Centre for Circus Arts Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer (CRITAC), and Polytechnique Montréal.
As part of its partnership with CRITAC, LAB7 hosted a team of researchers to test different depth cameras. The OptiTrack system was used as a point of reference to compare the results of different systems.
The team recorded the movements of circus artists who practiced different disciplines. The objective was to confront the cameras with unconventional movements, including movements that are characteristic of circus. The tests allowed the researchers to make a first assessment of the limits of these commercial cameras in regard to capturing these types of movement.
The project was led by Marion Cossin, PhD, Research Engineer at CRITAC, in partnership with Lama Seoud, PhD, of the Department of Computer and Software Engineering & Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, and Lisa Biche.
Upcoming project steps include an in-depth analysis of the data collected and an exploration of the potential for improvement of the algorithms used.
